Portobello Orchestra at St Peter's Church

November 26, 2011 from 7:30pm to 9:15pm
We rehearse in your patch - at the Methodist Church on Lancaster Road.  Our next concert has something for everyone: American Copland's 'Quiet City' tops the bill and is a 'conversation' between our trumpeter, Jonny, and Ruth on the rarely heard cor anglais. Next, Susanna sings a gorgeous handful of operatic arias and you're bound to know some of these. After the interval - with a free glass of wine or soft drink - it's back to America with Dvorak's New World symphony.  You'll all know bits of…See More

Portobello Orchestra at St Clement's Church

July 2, 2011 from 7:30pm to 9:30pm
Vivaldi's double trumpet concerto is our headline 'act'! It's so well known - but can you believe that it was only discovered in 1950?Nick-named the 'Red Priest' because of his red hair, Vivaldi died in 1741. Has this concerto lain smouldering, in Turin, for well over 200 years? It's flashy and fanfare-like: hearing aids will not be required...ProgrammeKeremPortobello - first performanceVivaldiDouble trumpet concertoSoloists: Alex Caldon and Martin HurrellSchumannSymphony #4…See More

So our program includes a fantastic organ concerto by Rheinberger. There's also an all wind and brass piece - the Turkish March by Haydn. That should blow the roof off!Free glass of wine or soft drink in the interval.Tickets £10/£7FREE to school students and Pepper Pot members [bring the voucher or ID]See More

Brought up in old farming family on 'Top o' Mendip' in the west country, I can still milk a cow, sheer a sheap, build a dry-stone wall, back a 4-wheel swing-axle trailer. Incredibly useful skills for central London...
Immersed in local music, was 2nd organist to the largest parish Church in Somerset, played cello in the Bath Youth Music Orchestra, Somerset Youth Orchestra and Wells Oratorio Orchestra. Then, after school, with 3 others, founded the Mid-Somerset Music Orchestra - and it's still flourishing today!
Lured to The City aged 25 put the accountancy training, in Bristol, to good use, specialising to later become a 'Licenced Insolvency Practitioner'. [a rare breed - just 1700 or so then in the UK]
Frenetically busy being a single parent for the last 17 yrs and with work, have only now resumed music playing with [& treasurer of] the Portobello Orchestra and immersed in chamber music with the London String Players.
All this nerdiness leavened by manic ski trips [4 in 2010 - whoopee!] and claiming still to be unbeaten at swimming breaststroke from the age of 13! [I wonder if my school record still stands...]
